Bascule Bridges

Barcelona Harbor Bridge

Barcelona’s harbor bridge is a typical example of a bascule bridge and is currently the world’s largest double bascule bridge. The four bascule pivots are equipped with large spherical plain bearings GE670 DW (bore 670 mm) with ELGOGLIDE® coating. The hydraulic drive cylinders are joined to the adjacent construction by means of maintenance-free joints. Spherical plain bearings with 260 mm and 280 mm bearing bores were used in this case. Each leaf of this impressive structure is 70 meters long and weighs approximately 2000 tons.

Kappeln Bascule Bridge

Maintenance-free INA large spherical plain bearings ensure functional safety in the bascule bridge at Kappeln on the Schlei in northern Germany. These bearings are capable of supporting heavy loads, are durable and give reliable operation even under challenging environmental conditions. Our high-performance ELGOGLIDE® sliding layer ensures that each bearing is maintenance-free for life.

Van Brienenoord

The Van Brienenoord 2 bascule bridge in Rotterdam in the Netherlands was completed in 1990. The bridge leaf is 80 meters long and weighs 1900 tons and is equipped with 4 FAG spherical roller bearings series 240 with bores of 850 mm. The bridge leaf is opened and closed using a toothed rack drive. FAG spherical roller bearings were also used as the toothed rack bearing supports and for the pivots of the toothed rack drive. The toothed rack drive itself is fitted with FAG spherical roller bearings and full-complement cylindrical roller bearings. A support mechanism was integrated into the bridge to relieve the loads on the rotary bearings during traffic (required protection from static vibration for the rolling bearings), whose support points and track rollers are supported by FAG spherical roller bearings.
