The Philipps Dam was built after the great storm tide of 1953 to protect the coast of the Netherlands. The Krammer lock is part of this flood protection system. The lock enables the passage of shipping traffic and has a sluice function. A sluice is a sealable water channel. It is part of the drainage system of the land behind the dike, particularly in marshy areas.
The gates are moved horizontally and weigh 400 tons. They are opened and closed using FAG spherical roller bearings.
