Another interesting dam project is the Shui Bu Ya dam in China. In this case, a rock-fill dam sealed with concrete was selected. At 200 m high and with a maximum length of approximately 600 m, it is the largest of its type. To create the dam, the river is diverted through a tunnel dug in the side of the mountain. During flooding, the tunnel is closed by a segment gate (radial gate) that must withstand water pressure of 150 meters water column when the reservoir is full. This generates a load of 5000 t on each of the two bearing positions of the segment gate.
The solid steel construction is supported by two aligned shafts each with one spherical plain bearing GE 1000 DW-2RS2 with ELGOGLIDE® coating with a bore diameter of 1 m and 2 FAG spherical roller bearings series 240 with 850 mm bearing bore. Each spherical plain bearing is located on one eccentric shaft section. The shafts are supported by spherical roller bearings on either side. Both shafts are connected to each other by means of a flange and can be turned by a lever system. This enables the angular position of the shaft to be changed so that the gate is pressed against the seal due to the eccentricity and the tunnel is sealed water tight. The main movement (opening/closing) of the radial gate is performed by the spherical plain bearings.
The moderate internal contact pressure of the bearing of 130 N/mm² is reached under the named loads. It would have been possible to select a smaller bearing, but the transmission of force in the adjacent construction dictated the bearing sizes required. An additional so-called roller gate is located upstream of the main gate that can be quickly shut if repairs need to be conducted. FAG spherical roller bearings are also used in this case.
The overflows of the completed dam were also fitted with INA spherical plain bearings.
