High-speed applications

Different bearing types can be used for specific maximum speeds only. A maximum speed parameter defines the maximum permissible speeds for standard designs. The speed parameter n x dm is the product of speed and mean bearing diameter.

Single row deep groove ball bearings, for example, can be used for speed parameters of up to n x dm = 500,000.

If the speed is to be increased even further, special measures are required, e.g.:

  • Adjusted radial internal clearance
  • Special lubricants
  • Particularly high level of accuracy of the raceways and adjacent parts
  • Ceramic balls, if necessary
  • Special cage material
  • Special cage design, if necessary

Such a modified design can have the potential for achieving a speed parameter of more than 1 million.
